Roundtable Discussion
Topic: "Should corporate meeting planning be a licensed practice?"
Moderator: John Palmer, CMP, Event Marketing Coordinator, The Legal Intelligencer

Roundtable Discussion Topic:
In the era of terrorism, violent civil disobedience, and a voracious media machine with an overnight ability to spin facts and sway public opinion, professional meeting planning is one of the most underappreciated and under-valued industries in the world. Corporate events have the ability to bankrupt companies if enough damage is done. In some instances, there have even been fatalities due to corporate events. This is a serious job with serious consequences for failure.

In Convene we always read about how important Meetings and Events are to the world of business. We believe we work in the best industry in the world. The number of articles on gaining a seat at the executive table demonstrate our significant value to the bottom-line. When CNN reports that Corporate Event Planners have one of the most stressful jobs with the lowest pay (median salary $39,000), why doesn’t our industry have a problem with that? We have the answer to that problem right before us. Let’s take a stand and really show businesses how important we are. If we work within a licensed practice, just like any responsible industry (realty, law, nursing, teaching, accounting, investment advising, etc), it would force the organizations we work for to take us and our profession seriously.
